Something (maybe nyquil?) splashed into my eye

I was taking nyquil to get over a cold. Some of it seem to be on my lips so I wet my lips with water and spat into the sink. But when I spat into the sink, something splashed into my left eye. I didn't feel any immediate pain but I ended up running water into my eye for about ten minutes. Was this the right call? Am I overreacting or is there something more? I have visine and I'm considering to use it but I'm not sure. What do I do?
